Inventory and Survey of the night-heron garden in Tân Mỹ Commune, Trà Ôn District, Vĩnh Long Province

The Mekong Delta

The region is rich in biodiversity, particularly in avian species and population.

Currently, water bird populations are mainly found in areas designated for conservation at the provincial or national levels, such as Tràm Chim National Park (Đồng Tháp), U-Minh Thượng (Kiên Giang), Cape Cà Mau, or in reserves like Láng Sen (Long An), Lung Ngọc Hoàng (Hậu Giang), Phú Mỹ (Kiên Giang); or smaller-scale habitats such as Cái Nước (Cà Mau), Bạc Liêu, and Vàm Hồ (Bến Tre); especially those scattered throughout the Mekong Delta often referred to as “Vuon Co” by locals. These ‘Vuon Co’ possess some smaller scales, such as Bằng Lăng (Cần Thơ) and Mua Xuan Agriculture Center (Hậu Giang).

Inventory of the night-heron garden

Besides, the inventory of the night-heron garden aims to align with the goals and planning methods approved by the provincial People’s Committee in Decision No. 2269/QĐ-UBND dated September 27, 2016, regarding the approval of the Biodiversity Conservation Planning for Vĩnh Long Province in the period 2015–2020 and orientation towards 2030.

Objectives of the Project

The objectives include surveying and assessing the current species diversity within the water bird population. By considering the biological characteristics of each species and the population density fluctuations throughout the year, the study aims to analyze the seasonal or regular presence and the threats to these bird species. The ultimate goal is to propose sustainable management and conservation plans.
