MEKONG DELTA

The Mekong Delta is the agricultural hub of Vietnam, known for rice, fish, fruits, and vegetables production. With an area of about 40000 km2 and a population of 20 million, it is acclaimed as ‘the rice bowl’ of Vietnam.

Despite its central role in the Vietnamese economy, the delta is vulnerable to the pressures of escalating climate change and regional development impacts.

Challenges such as rising sea levels, hydropower development have caused erosion, floods, droughts, land subsidence, as well as poverty and migration.

Resolution 120/NQ-CP and the Mekong Delta climate change response strategies until 2050 divide the delta into three major ecological regions: the saline-prone area, the transitional area between saline and freshwater, and the freshwater area.

Each ecological region requires the transformation of sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural systems

The Mekong Conservancy Foundation (MCF)

The Mekong Conservancy Foundation (MCF) is established with the aim of researching and addressing issues related to climate change, the environment, and promoting sustainable development in the Mekong Delta region. MCF is registered as a social fund in Vietnam, based on its strengths in building networks, transparency, and policy advocacy based on scientific evidence.

MCF was licensed by The Ministry Of Home Affairs in 2018. Since then, MCF has successfully fundraised and collaborated with various sponsors to provide financial support for research projects focusing on ecological conservation, biodiversity, livelihood development, and enhanced education for the residents of the Mekong Delta.

Farmers and their communities has received support for accessibility to markets, free training, assistance, and equipment to carry out sustainable agricultural activities, enhancing productivity, income, and livelihood development. Conditional benefits are determined based on the performance of the production groups established within the Cooperative, assisted by project partners.
